Gray’s Story

Age 42

My mother used to be really weird if she had a fight with someone and they yelled at her. It would automatically make her suicidal, and she told me she would hear a voice that said, “You would be better off dead.” This was from an argument! That’s all. It seemed ridiculous to me. Get over it! Really, why blow things out of proportion like that. I used to tell her to calm down a lot. She didn’t like that too much. I had to be so careful around her and never get angry or say something with a loud voice. I didn’t want to make her suicidal. And then she got diagnosed with bipolar disorder. When we heard about triggers and that suicidal thoughts were a common reaction to a trigger such as an argument, it made a lot more sense. She’s such a smart lady, and all this emotional stuff just seemed so odd in someone who was so smart. Now she manages the illness in many ways, and one of them is to tell people she can’t and won’t argue with them. If they yell, she walks out of the room. And if the suicidal thought comes up she says to herself, This is a normal reaction to a bipolar disorder thought. I do not have to listen and I certainly don’t want to die. I’m impressed with how vigilant she has become about taking care of herself. I always loved her. Now I admire her.
